Quick Tip: Non-Default View Lens Settings

CODE V strives to have intelligent default settings for all options, but still provides many customizations that allow you to change the behavior to be more appropriate for your system or personal preference. As an example, consider the View Lens option (Display > View Lens menu; or VIE command). This year’s CODE V User Group Presentation, “CODE V Tips and Tricks 2016,” highlighted three controls that you may want to switch from their default settings

1. Rays inside elements (RIE Y|N). By default, the View option draws rays inside lens elements (RIE Y):

You can disable this by unchecking the control on the Ray Drawing tab or using the RIE N command:

For systems with many fields, or with multiple thin elements, disabling rays inside elements can allow you to visualize the lenses and lens groupings more easily.

2. Show blocked ray (CAB Y|N). As a diagnostic option, View Lens shows all rays, even those that are blocked by apertures (CAB N):

You can remove the rays blocked by apertures and obscurations by unchecking the control on the Ray Drawing tab (CAB Y):

3. Aperture extensions on concave surfaces (ID Y|N). By default, View lens adds a small aperture increment beyond the clear aperture on concave surfaces when no edge aperture is defined. For many systems, this is realistic as the lens extends beyond the clear aperture so that it can be mounted. For severe aspheric surfaces, this can result in undesired sharp edges:

You can remove the increment by unchecking the control on the Surface Drawing tab (ID Y):
