Edge-lit Light Guides: Wide Surface Illumination with Light Guiding Plates

This tech talk will demonstrate how to simulate and optimize light guiding plates: transparent plates illuminated with LEDs from the side.

Different extraction features shapes will be demonstrated, with an optimization of either the density or the size of these elements. Extraction features break the total internal reflection in order to extract light from the plate.

Applications for such technology include backlit logos, luminaires, displays, backlit buttons, instrument panels, etc.
