The highly competitive automotive industry is facing unprecedented levels of change. As OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers aggressively transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs), development cycles are under pressure, rapidly shrinking from three or four years to less than two. Automotive companies need to find innovative ways to develop high-quality, highly integrated systems at a breakneck pace.

In concept, this is just what electronics digital twins (eDTs) are meant to achieve — enabling electronic control units (ECUs), vehicle software, and full electrical and electronic systems (known as E/E architecture) to be tested and validated earlier in the development cycle. In addition to accelerating and optimizing validation processes, eDTs free up physical testbenches and hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) systems for critical, late-stage issues.

The potential is compelling: Lower costs, faster time-to-market, more dependable delivery of higher quality software, all powering more innovation.

Fueling industry change

To help simplify and accelerate the auto industry’s adoption of eDT technologies, we recently announced a new collaboration with Tata Elxsi, a global leader in automotive digitalization and systems integration.

The partnership will bring together Tata Elxsi’s engineering capabilities in embedded systems with our industry-leading virtualization tools. Together, we will deliver pre-integrated, pre-verified solutions and services that enable OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to leverage eDTs and accelerate the development of virtual electronic control units (vECUs) across vehicular domains — including advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), powertrain, chassis, body control, gateway, and central compute.

The partnership is already yielding early success with several customers. The combined skills and tools we are bringing to market with Tata Elsxi demonstrate the importance of collaboration in a rapidly changing automotive and technological landscape.

Tata Elxsi is leveraging multiple Synopsys virtualization solutions to enable the development and deployment of eDTs, including:

  • Silver — A Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) solution for vECU development, functional test, and validation.
  • Virtualizer — A tool suite that enables the creation of virtual prototypes and eDTs of target hardware for software development, testing, and debug.
  • TPT — A time partition testing tool for automated software testing and verification of embedded control systems.

Our leadership with virtual prototypes and eDTs combined with Tata Elxsi’s expertise with automotive systems integration will help OEMs and their suppliers simplify vECU development, improve product quality, and accelerate time to market.
