The Renesas R-Car Virtual Platform for Early SW Development

Present-day vehicles already have 100M+ lines of software code build into various advanced driver assistance (ADAS), infotainment and safety functions. For software-defined vehicles, software development should start much earlier in the overall development lifecycle, ideally in parallel to hardware development. This requires shift-left in software development in automotive.

With the software first approach for R-Car SoCs and MCUs, Renesas is committed to offering necessary software development environments enabling early software development for OEMs & Tier1. Renesas’ R-Car simulation environment allows OEMs/Tier1s to start their software development much earlier. In the R-Car Gen4 SDK, Renesas offers a simulation environment which includes multiple IPs and device simulators; these are bit-accurate simulators, and the memory-map matches to respective HW devices, so that software developed on these simulators are binary compatible to the target devices.

For the R-Car Gen4, Renesas actively worked with Synopsys to support R-Car S4 Virtualizer Development Kit (VDK). This session will present an overview of the simulation environment features of R-Car S4 VDK, and Renesas’ utilization of the VDK for early software development of key software components.
