Renesas’ MCU and SoC Families

Synopsys Virtualizer and Virtualizer Development Kits (VDKs), the industry-leading virtual prototyping solutions, enable automotive companies to establish true electronics digital twin environments. These solutions support Continuous Integration/Continuous Testing (CI/CT) across the entire software stack, enabling OEMs and Tier 1/Tier 2 suppliers to accelerate software development and testing, enhance collaboration with suppliers and software partners, improve overall system and software quality, and initiate software development earlier while increasing testing efficiency.

Renesas and Synopsys have been collaborating for over 20 years, dating back to the early days of Renesas. Through their ongoing joint Center of Excellence (CoE) programs, they have successfully developed and advanced RH850 and R-Car virtual prototypes.

RH850 Family VDKs

Synopsys RH850 VDKs cover both Generation 1 and Generation 2 MCUs. They enable virtualization of the different automotive domains supported by Renesas RH850 MCU variants: powertrain, EV/HEV, chassis, body, air bag system, companion MCU in cockpit ECU, brake system, etc.

Synopsys RH850 VDKs have already been deployed in several Tier 1 and OEMs targeting the following use cases:

  • Early firmware development; including complex device drivers, customized HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) with hardware/software testing, and custom firmware integration & test.
  • Open/closed loop I/O testing with plant models and bus functional models.
  • Functional safety validation
    • FMEA/FMEDA test scenarios
    • Fault injection test scenarios
    • Coverage driven testing
  • SW testing in preparation for ISO26262 certification, eliminating all defects on the virtual prototype before and in parallel with full ECU hardware testing.

R-Car Family VDKs

Synopsys R-Car VDKs cover SoC variants from Gen 3, Gen 4, and Gen 5.

The R-Car VDKs family have multiple variants following the SoC version itself. They are targeting the following automotive domains: Gateway (central gateway), ADAS, Digital Cockpit (digital dashboard) and In-vehicle-infotainment (IVI).

The R-Car VDKs Primary use targets are:

  1. Development, integration and testing of “Vehicle Software Platform” on top of R-Car SoC based HPC/ECU including; driver, hypervisor, OSes, and middleware & application frameworks
  2. Full binary SW stack validation on R-Car SoC based high-performance-computing ECU (HPC ECU); especially the safety critical software within the mixed-criticality system.
