2019 LightTools User Group Meeting Presentations and Webinars Now Available

Last month, Synopsys' Optical Solutions Group held LightTools User Group Meetings featuring presentation topics ranging from LightTools case studies and usage tips to what's new in the software. If you weren't able to attend the meetings or the webinars, you still have a chance to see the presentation materials and webinar recordings, because they are now available on the Customer Support Portal. Log in and view the following presentations at your convenience:

Finding and Controlling Stray and Unwanted Light

Modeling and analyzing stray light are common practices for many types of optical systems. In this presentation, we highlight many of the tools and considerations for stray light analysis in LightTools.

Designing LiDAR with CODE V and LightTools

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is becoming increasingly important in the implementation of self-driving automobiles, but challenges for this technology are significant. In this paper, we present a case study for a scanning LiDAR system using CODE V and LightTools for the beam shaping and projection, as well as detection. We also look at the effect of various atmospheric conditions on the performance of the system.

Effective Usage of the Freeform Design Features

The LightTools Freeform Design feature is a sophisticated tool for the design and optimization of freeform optics. In this talk, we present examples for some powerful features found in the Freeform Design toolkit including a distortion compensation feature, capabilities for analyzing and correcting for Fresnel loss, and parameters that allow you to set the physical dimensions of the freeform.

Interplay of Freeform Tailoring and Tolerancing

Tailored surfaces can be used to couple sources to a target. There are many issues that can impact the target's distribution, including source characteristics and tailored surface characteristics. This presentation describes methods for adding surface perturbations to freeform surfaces, differencing two tailored freeforms, distortion correction, and source size impact.

LightTools 8.7 New Features

LightTools 8.7 features enhancements to help you with stray light analysis, including more scatter models (Harvey-Shack, ABg, Contamination, and MicroFacet), and scatter aiming. Additional updates in this release include improvements for ray data sources and the Freeform Design feature, as well as new capabilities for horticultural analysis and biomedical design.

Modeling Diffuse Plastics in LightTools

This talk discusses various methods of modeling diffuse plastic materials in LightTools. Topics include choosing materials from libraries, applying measurements, and making a custom diffuse plastic using Mie scattering particles.

Library Updates

We add new materials and measured BSDF files to our libraries often, and now you can access those files between releases. The LightTools Measured BSDF Library and Material Library for non-CODE V glasses and plastics is available on our Customer Support Portal.

LightTools Survey: Make A Difference — Send Us Your Feedback!

We invite you to participate in a survey to let us know how we can improve your LightTools experience! We would like to give you the opportunity to provide feedback on the product features you frequently use, new features, documentation, and technical support.

The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. As a token of our appreciation for your time and effort, all respondents to the survey have the option to receive a Synopsys umbrella or portable USB charging bank.

Note: If you are unable to complete the survey after you start, you can return to it at another time using the same link. The survey will remember the responses you entered, so you can pick up where you left off.

We thank you for your participation, and we look forward to getting your feedback!
