Case Study: Facial Detection and Recognition for Always-On Applications

Although there are many applications for low-power facial recognition in edge devices, perhaps the most challenging to design are always-on, battery-powered systems that use facial recognition for access control. Laptop, tablet and cellphone users expect hands-free and instantaneous facial recognition. This means the electronics must be always on, constantly looking to detect a face, and then ready to pull from a data set to recognize the face. This presentation will describe the challenges of moving traditional facial detection neural networks to the edge. It will explore a case study of a face recognition access control application requiring continuous operation and extreme energy efficiency. Finally, it will describe how the combination of Synopsys DesignWare ARC EM and EV processors provides low-power, efficient DSP and CNN acceleration for this application.

Technology Demos

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Acceleration (SLAM) on DesignWare ARC EV7x processors

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) creates and updates a map of an unknown environment while at the same time keeping track of an agent's location within it. It is a key component in autonomous vehicles, robotics, augmented and virtual reality systems. This demo shows how a SLAM stack can be accelerated by offloading some of the processing to the ARC EV7x processors, as well as how adding an extra core to parallelize the algorithms can further increase the acceleration. We’ll also show how the EV7x can utilize its Deep Neural Network engine to add more intelligence to the system.


SRGAN Super Resolution on DesignWare ARC EV7x processors

Image super resolution techniques reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution one. Although this can be done with classical vision algorithms, the results are inferior to what neural-network-based solutions can now offer. In this demo, we show how a Generative Adversarial Network can be used to intelligently infer the missing pixel data and generate a high-quality high-resolution image. The demo will run on the ARC EV7x processor and showcase the Deep Neural Network accelerator.
