We have witnessed two major shifts in verification during the past two decades. During both, design teams have been able to rise to the challenge of verifying the most complex state-of-the-art designs by applying innovative verification technology. Today, we are facing new verification challenges. In design and verification, the issues are so great that the amount of money spent on designing a chip is approaching twice the cost of manufacturing it. Verification and embedded software are the two major drivers of the growth in total cost of design, with verification now accounting for about half of the total hardware development cost.
