What's New? - Interview with Lead Software Designer at Altera
Altera recently released their SoC FPGA Virtual Target – a PC-based, fast, functional simulation of an embedded development board with Altera's Cyclone V SoC or Arria V SoC FPGA at its heart. With the SoC FPGA Virtual Target, users can create device-specific production software which can run unmodified on real hardware. Altera's own software development teams have already been using the Virtual Target to port operating systems such as Linux and VxWorks as well as develop complex device drivers.
User Tip: Start with End in Mind
What design task will you achieve with a virtual prototype? When thinking about using virtual prototypes, this is the first question that should come to mind. Too often, developers get overwhelmed with the virtual prototype creation task and set unrealistic expectations. To avoid delays and lengthy discussions amongst your team, be clear about your design task and what you expect to achieve with the use of a virtual prototype. This will save you time, money and headaches while deploying a virtual prototype-based environment.
To illustrate this, let's look at a common use: an operating system port. If the design task is to port Linux to a new architecture, what is needed to get started? A virtual prototype would need to have the core, memories, timers and a few other peripherals. Such a platform can be assembled in a day for the software development team to start their initial software development. While the software team makes use of this initial prototype, a modeling team can continue to iteratively develop the virtual prototype and deliver a more complete prototype that is aligned with the software development timeline!
