Overview of 2007.04a Release of DesignWare Synthesizable IP for AMBA 2.0 and AMBA 3 AXI

Meni Jayaswal, Sr. CAE

Synopsys recently announced 2007.04a release of DesignWare synthesizable intellectual property (IP) for the AMBA 2.0 and AMBA 3 AXI protocols. The DesignWare Library solution allows designers to easily integrate the high-speed protocol into their systems-on-chip (SoC) designs and enables designers of AMBA protocol-based systems to focus on the development of value-added elements to differentiate their products. The 2007.04a release includes 3 new IPs:

Also included in the release are extensive enhancements to the existing IP for the AMBA 2.0 and AMBA 3 AXI protocols.

The DesignWare I2S IP implements the popular 3-wire interface for streaming stereo audio between devices. This new release removes the complexity of adopting the DesignWare I2S protocol by offering a ready-to-implement solution. It is available encrypted as part of the DesignWare Library and as source code as part of the DWC APB Advanced Peripherals package.

The AXI to APB3 bridge and fabric provide a seamless interface between the high-speed AXI bus and the APB3 bus. The AXI to APB3 bridge and fabric are backward compatible with the AMBA 2.0 APB protocol thus supporting all existing APB-based peripherals.

The new AXI to AXI Bridge supports upsizing, downsizing and multiple clock domains synchronization features between two AXI interconnects.

Both DW_axi_x2p and DW_axi_x2x are available encrypted as part of the DesignWare Library and as source code as part of the DWC AMBA Fabric package.

Additionally, the latest enhancement to the DesignWare interconnect fabric for AMBA 3 AXI (DW_axi) includes bi-directional command support enabling masters on separate interconnect fabrics to seamlessly access slaves on adjacent connected interconnect tiles. DW_axi includes multiple timing path optimization modes which enable the designer to meet performance and area requirements with ease. The combinatorial, forward and fully registered timing mode options, provided on a per channel basis, provide the flexibility to tailor the synthesizable IP to better meet the designs needs.

The Synopsys DesignWare solutions for AMBA includes the three parts required to facilitate today's AMBA-based subsystem designs: AMBA compliant synthesizable IP, AMBA 2.0 & AMBA 3 Assured verification IP and automated subsystem assembly with coreAssembler.

The 2007.04a release of DesignWare synthesizable IP for the AMBA 2 and AMBA 3 AXI protocols is available now at Designware AMBA Solutions. DesignWare Library licensees have access to this IP at no additional cost. RTL source code is available for license separately, on a pay-per-use basis.
