Presentation Overview
Simulation has become a powerful tool in modern automotive and aerospace system design. Simulation of the many complicated electrical, electromechanical, mechanical, thermal, and other systems in a design allows engineers to quickly evaluate design tradeoffs. However, early in a system's design process when many design decisions must be made, engineers often have limited information about the specific components that will be used in the design. Only toward the end of the design process are actual components available for system integration. A top-down design methodology using mixed-technology simulation is well suited to this sort of design process. This presentation will demonstrate a top-down design methodology for design of a fuel cell electric vehicle powertrain using the Saber Designer suite of design tools. Design issues discussed will range from power network sizing to transmission tuning and fuel cell hydration control through instrumentation and power electronics design.
