Color Modeling in Solid-State Lighting
Often with traditional, non-LED sources (incandescent, fluorescent tubes, or CFL) the source color is not the largest design challenge faced. Thomas Davenport of the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys discusses how a higher level of LED model fidelity is often required for luminaire design.

Light Show: Synopsys' OSG Group Helps Designers Put Photons in the Right Place
The optical tools they put out have wide applicability, but, in terms of system design, they include two very different ends of the component spectrum: photolithography used in the building of chips and "photon coercion" used in the building of flat panel displays. These come via two different tools that, in some regards, do the same thing in two different ways: they both track the behavior of photons as they interact with materials - Electronic Engineering Journal.

Freeform Optics Design Advances Lighting and Illumination
Freeform surfaces are used for most illumination tasks - from automotive headlights to streetlights - when applications with complex illumination requirements cannot be achieved with conventional, rotationally symmetric optics. Combined with light-emitting diodes (LEDs), illumination systems using freeform surfaces can yield compact systems with long lifetime, low power consumption, and high system efficiency - Opto IQ.
