New Saber 2012.12 Product Release Available for Download
A new release of Saber is now available and features 50+ user-requested improvements and a comprehensive set of new capabilities. In addition to the numerous usability enhancements, the 2012.12 product release delivers major improvements in performance, robustness, and convergence. Here are some highlights from the many improvements in the 2012.12 Saber edition (you can watch a summary of the eUpdate on YouTube):

Improved Robustness & Convergence
Simulator robustness provides a foundation for model-based product development. Saber's leading capabilities in this area have been extended even further to address the growing complexity in contemporary electronic design. Out of 100 complexity-stressed test-cases, 86% converge with default simulator settings in 2012.12 compared to 76% in 2011.09. In addition, Saber now supports an optional new convergence algorithm which predicts potential convergence problems and automatically changes the default simulator settings prior to simulation starts.

Increased Simulation Performance
In addition to the 2-4x speed improvements measured between the 2010.09 and 2011.09 Saber product releases, the 2012.12 release enhances speed performance another 5-10%. The speed improvements enable engineers to rapidly verify designs and subsequently deliver specification compliant products to meet time-to-market requirements.

More intuitive SaberRD GUI
The integrated simulation solution in SaberRD has been enhanced to improve productivity while performing simulation tasks. The intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) now supports floating windows. This new feature enables schematic and block diagram inspection concurrently with post-processing and analysis.

New Model Management in SaberRD
New enhancements to model management features in SaberRD have simplified integration, consumption, and maintenance of user-created models. The new model browser enables users to quickly inspect all model related data. For instance, the user can quickly identify VHDL-AMS model associations including entity, architecture, and package definition as well as the physical file location.

Updated MathWorks Simulink Interface
The integration between Saber and MathWorks Simulink enables system engineers to re-use Simulink control system models directly in Saber. The integration software has been updated to include two major enhancements:

  • The Simulink model import interface through Simulink Coder (formerly Real-Time Workshop) now supports tunable model parameters, C & C++ code, and MinGW compiled code.
  • The Simulink co-simulation interface now includes support for Simulink simulations using fixed time-step algorithms. This is required for Simulink models that are used down-stream in real-time verification systems.

Integration with TCAD
Accurate simulation of electrical systems and subsystems often requires high-fidelity power semiconductor models. To meet the simulation quality requirements, Synopsys has released a new Saber interface to Synopsys TCAD, a tool commonly used by power semiconductor engineers for device design and characterization. This new interface enables device engineers to export Saber models directly from their familiar TCAD environment. The high fidelity models are consumed by system engineers in the Saber environment to verify their system and subsystem designs.

Saber Harness – New Electrical System Design Flow closes Gap between Functional System Design & Physical Wiring Harness
Synopsys' electrical system design (ESD) solution, Saber Harness, has been enhanced with powerful new capabilities to streamline the design of electrical wiring systems that include ECUs, actuators, sensors and storage components. The holistic Saber Harness based ESD flow is now much more efficient than the flow embodied by other commercial tools.

The new release of Saber Harness fills a gap in the vehicle ESD tool flow between the functional design tools and the tools responsible for the physical wiring implementation. Presently, engineers use functional design tools to define high level features that ultimately find their way to software embedded in a digital ECU. Wiring harness tools, such as Saber Harness, enable engineers to implement physical systems that include connections with ECUs and other components in the electrical system. Disparate tool kits introduce gaps in the flow from functional design to physical implementation. Saber Harness fills the tool and methodology gaps and subsequently meets the needs of contemporary automotive and aerospace applications, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, which includes ECUs and wiring for engine, braking, and gearbox control.

Saber Harness 2013.03 addresses the challenge described above by providing an efficient solution that captures both function-based definitions of the wiring harness system, and design information from the overall vehicle function. The user-defined function library in Saber Harness enables partially automated synthesis of various components of a wiring harness system, such as CAN or FlexRay. These systems often include transmission lines, connectors, and other critical components. Saber Harness automatically checks to ensure that physical signal pins are properly connected according to the functional definition of the vehicle system. These automated capabilities improve quality, eliminate manual errors, and reduce implementation and validation time for the electrical wiring design.

Bosch, CST & Synopsys - Saber based Development of Automotive ECU Systems
The leading German automotive magazine, Elektronik Automotive, features an article authored by Synopsys, CST and Bosch. The authors describe how to use the Saber/CST STUDIO SUITE integration to verify the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) behavior of automotive electronic control units (ECUs).

The increasing trend of electrification in modern automotive platforms raises the likelihood that EMC effects will degrade system performance. Advanced engineering teams leverage simulation-based methodologies to address the EMC challenges so that they can meet stringent quality, cost, and time-to-market requirements. Different tools offer unique modeling and simulation benefits that are required to solve EMC problems. Subsequently, a well-connected modular solution that captures the strengths of each specialized tool yields the highest quality design. To this end, Synopsys Inc. and CST AG formed a technology partnership in 2012 to integrate their complementary strengths, combining system simulation with structural EM simulation. The combined solution includes Synopsys' multi-domain system-level simulation and modeling platform, Saber, and CST STUDIO SUITE. In the article, Synopsys, CST, and Bosch present an overview of the tool integration and demonstrate a use case for how the combined solution helps solve sophisticated EMC problems and ensures that final automotive product requirements are met.

NASA - Saber Methodology Article in Mil-Aero Technical Bulletin (MTB)
In this first issue of Synopsys' Mil-Aero Technical Bulletin (MTB), Kurt Mueller of Synopsys describes how NASA uses Saber to implement their simulation-based analysis methodology used for the complete power system design on the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Module. In the Q&A section, Balaji Emandi, Saber CAE, discusses several ways of using Saber's Worst-Case Analysis (WCA) tool to ensure proper systems operation over a wide range of environmental, operating and tolerance variation.

The mission of the MTB is to provide important technology information and insights to engineers and managers in the aerospace and defense sectors. In each edition, technologists address timely challenges and methods applicable to the design and verification of high-reliability electrical, electronic and multi-domain systems.

An updated version of the SaberRD Student Edition (SaberRDS) is now available for download on the Synopsys website. Through SaberRD, students and universities can gain access to one of the leading professional development tools in electrical and system engineering for educational purposes and non-commercial projects. The student edition of Saber is updated frequently to ensure that universities and students have access to latest technology and benefits from new capabilities. Compared to the commercial edition, SaberRD Student Edition is only limited by design capacity and availability of advanced analysis capabilities, such as worst case analysis and grid computing.
