Synopsys Annual Back to School Drive: Filling Backpacks, Preparing for Success

It’s that time of year again when kids in the United States are heading back to school, thinking about a fresh start. But not all students will have the tools and supplies necessary to succeed. In order to help provide school supplies to underserved children in the Bay Area, Synopsys once again hosted an annual Back to School Drive in partnership with Family Giving Tree, a nonprofit organization that’s a catalyst between social services agencies serving children in need and host companies in Silicon Valley and the surrounding areas.

The backpack and school supply drive benefits the approximately 325,000 students in the Bay Area who are in the Federal Free or Reduced Price Meal programs. In 2011, Family Giving Tree provided 14,200 backpacks. This year, Family Giving Tree aims to supply 15,000 backpacks, and give more students the opportunity to begin school with all the supplies they need.

Every year Synopsys employees look forward to participating in the Back to School Drive, engaging co-workers, family and friends to make donations and contribute their time, working together as a team during the “Stuff the Bus” volunteer activity. “It’s a nominal donation for a huge impact on the readiness and self-esteem of these children,” said Cynthia Fontenot, Synopsys’s Back to School Drive employee leader. “They are the future and we want to do our best to prepare them for it.”

Between direct donations and matching gift funds Synopsys employees raised nearly $17,000 in this year’s backpack drive, or the equivalent of 969 backpacks for students in need.

“Stuff the Bus” took place at Synopsys on August 10, 2012. Participants sorted and inserted school supply kits into pre-purchased backpacks, then loaded a yellow school bus with the filled backpacks. The stuffed school bus delivered 600 of those backpacks to three Mountain View School District elementary schools that Synopsys supported in this year’s drive. The bus then delivered the remaining backpacks to Family Giving Tree’s warehouse to be distributed to other local schools in need.

Synopsys and the Synopsys Outreach Foundation are dedicated to furthering the education of young people and support education through community involvement programs, such as the Back to School Drive and sponsorship of numerous science fairs, offering students opportunities for academic success.
