Anveshana 2012 Science Fair – Bridging the Gap between Disadvantaged Indian Students and Engineering Colleges

Synopsys India and Agastya International Foundation, an education trust that provides science education programs for disadvantaged children and teachers, held Anveshana 2012 on February 9, 2012. Anveshana is a science fair aimed at developing innovation and creativity among students from engineering colleges and schools in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Thirty-six schools and engineering colleges from Karnataka participated in this year’s program.

Prior to the fair, engineering colleges were asked to generate ideas for problems the students could solve. Out of the 61 problems generated, 36 were selected for the competition. Participating school children were then teamed with college students to develop projects that could address one of the problems. Participating teams underwent training in model-making, conceptualization and leadership skills to help them complete their projects. Each team presented its research project during the fair.

Projects included: Induction of systemic resistance and management of okra wilt with biocides, effective disposal of waste using minimum resources, and portable spectrophotometer for analysing the purity of drinking water.

"Anveshana helps in the cross-pollination of ideas between school children and college students. We hope it will inspire school children to continue their studies, thus reducing school dropout rates," said Dr. Pradip K. Dutta, corporate vice president and managing director for Synopsys India.
