Synopsys Conglaturaltes 129 Master's and Bachelor's Graduates from its Armenia Educational Department
Synopsys Program Educates Future Engineers for Armenia's Growing High-Tech Industry

YEREVAN, Armenia - September 28, 2009 - Synopsys, Inc., a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design, verification and manufacturing, today announced that 55 Master's degree and 74 Bachelor's degree students from Synopsys' Armenia Educational Department (SAED) successfully completed the Synopsys educational program this year and now stand ready to begin professional engineering careers. When the Armenian Government declared high-tech industry to be a flagship of the national economy, making high-quality engineering education available to Armenian students became a priority.

To that end, Synopsys established educational programs in microelectronics design with the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) in 2004 and with Yerevan State University (YSU) in 2005. The goal of SAED is to train highly qualified specialists in the field of very large scale integration (VLSI) design and electronic design automation (EDA), enabling them to transition quickly into the workforce upon graduation. More than 400 students have graduated from SAED, and most are now employed by Synopsys Armenia or other local high-tech companies such as Virage Logic, Mentor Graphics and LTX-Credence.

After several years of rigorous study, today's graduates are well equipped to meet the highest international engineering standards and quickly acclimate to the fast-paced world of the high-tech industry. During the commencement ceremony, Dr. Chi-Foon Chan, president and chief operating officer at Synopsys, conferred Synopsys Certificates of Achievement to the graduates.

In the first years of the Bachelor's degree program, students obtain a basic education in mathematics, physics and other scientific disciplines at their chosen universities. After acquiring a basic education, the top-performing students are selected by Synopsys technical experts and professors from their university to participate in the SAED program. Further education in the Bachelor's program, Master's program and Ph.D. studies is obtained through a customized SAED curriculum for VLSI design and EDA.
Studies are conducted in specially equipped classrooms donated by Synopsys (located in Synopsys Armenia and select universities) where SAED students have access to the latest EDA software tools. Teaching, supervision of course projects, Master's theses and Ph.D. dissertations are targeted toward actual design projects at Synopsys Armenia. Projects are completed in conjunction with leading professionals from Synopsys and professors from the corresponding university. Upon successful completion of the SAED program, graduates are qualified to work for Synopsys Armenia as well as other high-tech companies.

"Our latest engineering graduates are well prepared for promising careers in the high-tech industry, and we congratulate them on their outstanding achievement. We are pleased to support a program that is so instrumental in helping the next generation of Armenian engineers build strong careers and make a significant impact on device technology innovation," said Dr. Chan. "We look forward to these graduates' future contributions and expect them to play a pivotal role in Armenia's microelectronic design industry." "The curricula developed at SAED are world class, as demonstrated by their translation into four different languages and use at universities on three different continents," said Rich Goldman, chief executive officer of Synopsys Armenia CJSC, and vice president of Corporate Marketing and Strategic Alliances at Synopsys. "Providing students with access to Synopsys' latest software allows them to train on the same software used by the world's leading chip designers."

"We support IT development in Armenia and provide specialized training in state-of-the-art technology to prepare students for advanced careers in EDA," said Sc.D., Professor Vazgen Melikyan, director of the Synopsys Armenia educational department and honorable scientist of RA. "This field develops rapidly, and we must continuously revise our curricula in order to maintain both our high quality of education and Armenia's position as a high-tech leader."

In his valedictory speech today, Vahram Aharonyan, a 2009 Master's degree program graduate, first year Ph.D. student and a current employee of Synopsys Armenia, said, "We are thankful for the dedication and great efforts made by people who lead Synopsys in its success and in its development in our country. The worldwide standards of SAED's education help provide an opportunity for department graduates to attain the knowledge and skills they need to join Synopsys' Armenia R&D team and other leading high-tech companies."
