Rich GoldmanPresident of Armenian Microelectronics Olympiad Organizing Committee
VP for Corporate Marketing and Strategic Market Alliances, Synopsys, Inc.
CEO of Synopsys Armenia CJSC
It is with great pleasure that I again welcome you to the Armenian Microelectronics Olympiad, now in our third year, in the beautiful city of Yerevan. The first two Olympiads surpassed all our expectations, and once again expectations are high. Armenia has long had a strong tradition in microelectronics, as a well-known center of microelectronics in the former Soviet Union. Armenia served as the country's leading center of design and fabrication of microelectronic devices, as well as electrical engineering, control systems, and telecommunications. Highly qualified engineers trained and worked in Armenia, at such seminal enterprises as Yerevan Computer Research and Development Institute, Microelectronics scientific-research Institute, “Transistor” scientific production association, and The Yerevan Telecommunication Research Institute. After the demise of the Soviet Union, difficult times befell the Armenian technology and economy. Recently, the microelectronics industry has started to arise again and re-establish Armenia's impressive tradition in this area. A significant number of well-known companies such as Synopsys, Virage Logic, Mentor and Epygi have established offices in Armenia and are developing IC design and EDA software here. The results are promising. These companies are also contributing to the development of the IT sphere in Armenia, through special programs such as the Annual RA Presidential Awards to the best students and pupils in IT Sector sponsored by Synopsys. The newest of these efforts is the Global IT Award of the Republic of Armenia President. The main goals of the Armenian Microelectronics Olympiad are: incenting further development of microelectronics in Armenia; discovery of young, talented engineers; increasing interest in microelectronics among Armenia's youth; and identifying necessary improvements in educational programs.
The Third Armenian Microelectronics Olympiad takes place in the state-of-the-art Synopsys campus, the most advanced engineering facility in Armenia, dedicated last year by President Robert Kocharyan. This is the former site of the "Transistor" facility, a mainstay of the former Armenian microelectronics industry. Just as we have restored this building from a once abandoned facility to a modern engineering building, you will be helping to transform the Armenian microelectronic industry to a modern and leading industry for this country.
Thank to all the sponsors for contributing to this event and to the participants for coming.
Welcome to an exciting, enriching and fulfilling occasion of the Fourth Armenian Microelectronics Olympiad.
I wish you good results and further success in your education and in your career.
