LTE/LTE-Advanced: The Next Generation Wireless Standard
LTE and LTE-Advanced are hot items when it comes to teaching advanced communication design and they are also the starting point for future research activities. Understanding the LTE/LTE-A standard is not trivial due to the standard's complexity. For LTE (3 GPP Release 8), the specification of only the physical layer alone covers about 300 pages, resulting in a significant ramp-up effort for both students and instructors if starting from scratch.
LTE/LTE-A Physical Layer Simulation Solution - Now Available!
In 2012, Synopsys made its LTE/LTE-A Physical Layer Simulation Solution available to its University Program members, enabling the rapid setup of classes on these latest communication standards. The LTE/LTE-A solution consists of SPW, the high-performance physical layer simulation environment and the LTE/LTE-A Physical Layer Library.

The LTE/LTE-A Physical Layer Simulation Library is a set of ready-to-use simulation systems providing an executable specification of the 3 GPP standard. As the only simulation library verified against Rhode & Schwarz signal generators, it provides unmatched time savings for wireless physical layer system designs and the highest confidence in its compliance to the standard.
The reference systems support uplink and downlink specifications of Release 8 and Release 10, including both FDD and TDD modes. They are organized as end-to-end simulation systems, providing transmitter and channel models as well as both ideal receivers (with perfect knowledge of the channel) and non-ideal receivers (which estimate the channel characteristics). The ideal receiver provides the best achievable performance for comparison against real, non-ideal receiver implementations.
The LTE/LTE-A Physical Layer Simulation Library is organized into specific regression testbenches which mirror the tests specified in the standards reference documents. The user can immediately run these regressions and easily modify system parameters of interest in order to study the performance impact in any scenario.
By replacing or modifying blocks or subsystems, the user can quickly adapt the reference model to the specific implementation for their end product.
