June 23, 2012 – Synopsys' renovation of Lee Mathson Middle School kicked off with one powerful question: "Is Synopsys ready to serve?"
“Synopsys is always ready!” rang back across the school’s quad on a Saturday morning in June. More than 500 executive staff, employees, family and friends of Synopsys, all clad in purple t-shirts emblazoned with the “Chip In – Make an Impact” slogan, rallied with members of the local community for a day of service. The goal: to physically transform a school from plain to inspirational in an underserved area in San Jose.
The day began with a brief formal program during which California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren spoke about the importance of corporate involvement in the community. She encouraged more corporations to get involved with the community, suggesting that “if every corporation in our community did what Synopsys did, we would have a much better community.”
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed spoke about some of the challenges that face the students of Lee Mathson. Lee Mathson Principal Jacqueline Montejano described improvements the school has made in its curriculum and attendance during the past year. She emphasized how enhancing the school’s physical environment will further engender creativity, optimism and pride in its students.

Synopsys President and Co-CEO Chi-Foon Chan thanked the employees, families, corporate partners and members of the school community who came out to celebrate Synopsys’ 25th anniversary through service in the community. “Why are we doing this? Because it's the right thing and it's the smart thing. Our employees live in the community, we have to help the community, and it is one of our corporate values.”
Synopsys teamed with the Care Force division of City Year, a nonprofit service organization, to manage the event. Volunteers brought energy and smiles to projects such as painting murals, building and painting benches, gardening, and repairing the school gym and outdoor basketball courts.
For Synopsys product marketing manager Neel Desai, “volunteering means giving back to the community, spending time with my son, having a lot of fun, and working with Synopsoids. It’s fantastic that we are all here making the school ready for the next year.”

By devoting more than 3,000 volunteer hours, Synopsys significantly improved the facilities and learning environment for the 650 students that attend the school annually. “I can’t wait to see their expressions when they come back in the fall to a sparkling and beautiful place to learn,” said Principal Montejano.
At the end of the long work day, Beach Pace, executive director for City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley, closed the event by quoting Synopsys Chairman and Co-CEO Aart de Geus: “You can’t make a company great by giving back to the community, but you can’t be a great company unless you do.”
Synopsys Employees Volunteer Worldwide
Synopsys’ ongoing commitment to give back to the community extends well beyond its headquarters in California. Employees from offices all over the world consistently volunteer in their local communities, and the celebration activities for Synopsys’ 25th anniversary reflect this spirit.
In India, Synopsys employees raised money to buy school kits for 12,000 children and distributed the kits to schools in Karnataka. Synopsys’ Dublin, Ireland office made a donation to Junior Achievement Ireland, a program that encourages students to stay in school and teaches them necessary skills to succeed. Synopsys employees in Shanghai, China volunteered for a “Dream Day at the Zoo,” bringing disadvantaged children to the Shanghai Zoo. Synopsys Armenia raised money to fund eye surgeries for local children in need, while employees in Singapore spent a day bringing joy by playing games with 60 children in Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. In Canada, Synopsys volunteers participated in the Habitat for Humanity Build a Day event.
Synopsys’ community involvement programs inspire and nurture the next generation of the world’s technologists—many of whom will become future employees, partners and customers. By actively partnering with local organizations, encouraging employee leadership and providing financial donations, Synopsys’ global workforce improves the quality of life and economic vitality in its local communities.
