Program Prepares Future Engineers to Begin Professional Careers Benefiting Armenia's Growing High-Tech Industry

YEREVAN, Armenia, Oct. 3, 2012 - Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS), a global leader providing software, IP and services used to accelerate innovation in chips and electronic systems, today graduated 46 Master's degree and 43 Bachelor's degree students from Synopsys' Armenia Education Department (SAED), including 75 students from State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) and 14 students from Yerevan State University (YSU) joint programs. Eight graduates from Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University (RAU) were awarded Synopsys Certificates of Recognition for their proficiency with Synopsys software tools. Having completed their coursework in the field of very large scale integration (VLSI) design and electronic design automation (EDA), the students are now ready to begin professional engineering careers.

At the commencement ceremony, Dr. Chi-Foon Chan, president and co-CEO at Synopsys, recognized the achievement of the graduates and conferred Synopsys Certificates of Achievement upon each graduate. "Close cooperation between business and academia is essential in successfully preparing highly skilled, industry-ready specialists for careers in the dynamic sector of microelectronics," said Dr. Chan. "We are committed to supporting and investing in Armenian youth to help build a growing and sustainable high-tech industry in Armenia. Keeping this goal in mind, the success of our joint educational program with SEUA and YSU has far exceeded our expectations."

"Once again we are witnessing the brilliant results of the prestigious SEUA-Synopsys Armenia educational model," said Mr. Avetisyan, SEUA rector and Armenian National Academy of Science associate member conferring diplomas for SEUA. "On behalf of the administration and the faculty, I congratulate all the graduates and wish them success in all their professional endeavors. The students' future success will be a reflection of the invaluable contribution that, through partnership programs, Synopsys Armenia is providing to the educational system of Armenia."

"I congratulate the graduates on reaching this important and exciting milestone in their professional lives," said Mr. Simonyan, YSU rector and Armenian National Academy of Science associate member. "The study at YSU followed by the education at the SAED provided students with the unique opportunity to develop and test their values and attitudes, to extend their skills and graduate as industry-ready specialists in the IT sphere."

"SAED provides students with a world-class education, offering a comprehensive curriculum adopted by prestigious universities, both in-country and worldwide; Synopsys' state-of-the-art, industry-leading electronic design automation software and Educational Design Kits; highly qualified and experienced faculty; and a modern technical infrastructure and environment," said Rich Goldman, CEO of Synopsys Armenia CJSC, and vice president of corporate marketing and strategic alliances at Synopsys. "We sustain the unique industry-university model by implementing new and innovative methods that both deepen and widen the program."

Overall, SAED has provided the industry with hundreds of highly skilled engineers, including 403 with Bachelor's degrees, 338 of whom went on to earn their Master's degrees. Currently, 71 percent of all graduates have been hired by Synopsys Armenia, accounting for 43 percent of Synopsys Armenia employees, and most others have found jobs with prestigious IT employers in Armenia. "During the last decade our educational program has been constantly evolving, and the fact that 100 graduates were hired by Synopsys in the past year highlights the program's success," said Vazgen Melikyan, honorable scientist of RA, director of the SAED and head of SEUA's Microelectronic Circuits and Systems Interfaculty Chair. "With these achievements we are further driven to improve the program."

The success of the industry-university program model in Armenia has inspired similar programs abroad. Just three months ago, the Synopsys and National Research University of Electronic Technology (MIET) joint educational program successfully graduated the fifth class of advanced engineering students. Established in 2006, the two-year master's program is based on Synopsys Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and a customized curriculum for integrated circuit (IC) design provided by SAED. To date, 92 students have successfully graduated from the Synopsys-MIET program, and most are employed by leading semiconductor companies in Russia and the region.

"We have many years of experience working with the Chair of IC Design at the National Research University MIET," said Alexander L. Stempkovskiy, director of the Federal State Budget Institution of the Science at the Institute of Problems of Design in Microelectronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPDM RAS). "The qualifications of MIET master's students that have studied at the Synopsys-MIET Educational Center are impressive. They demonstrate a deep knowledge of the IC design flow and skill in using the Synopsys' EDA tools and Matlab, Tcl and C/C++ to implement missing links in existing flows. They have participated in joint scientific research and technical projects with foreign companies such as Freescale, AMIS and ON Semiconductor, demonstrating ability to independently carry out complex research."

At the commencement ceremony, Professor Vazgen Melikyan was granted the honorable title of Professor of MIET for his significant contribution to microelectronics education.

In his valedictory speech today, Abraham Balabanyan, a 2012 master's degree program graduate and a current employee of Synopsys Armenia said, "I consider myself a lucky student. I had the opportunity to obtain qualified and up-to-date knowledge from skilled professors; to learn and use the state-of-the-art EDA tools; to study in well-equipped facilities; to work at Synopsys, a leading EDA company; and to apply and further advance my technical knowledge."

About the Industry-University Educational Model
In the first years of the Bachelor's degree program, students obtain a basic education in mathematics, physics and other scientific disciplines at their chosen university. The top-performing students are then selected by Synopsys technical experts and professors for enrollment in the SAED program. Further education in the Bachelor's program, Master's program and Ph.D. studies is obtained through a customized SAED curriculum for VLSI design and EDA. Studies are conducted in specially equipped classrooms provided by Synopsys where SAED students have access to the latest EDA software tools in use in industry. Teaching, supervision of course projects, Master's theses and Ph.D. dissertations resemble actual design projects at Synopsys Armenia. Projects are completed in conjunction with leading professionals from Synopsys and professors from the corresponding university. Upon successful completion of the SAED program, graduates are industry-ready specialists and qualified to work for Synopsys Armenia as well as other high-tech companies. This source of engineers is proving to be an important factor in the development of an EDA industrial cluster in Armenia.
