Synopsys Congratulates More Than 120 Master’s and Bachelor’s Graduates from its Armenia Educational Department
Program Educates Future Engineers for Armenia’s Growing High-Tech Industry

YEREVAN, Armenia – October 1, 2008 - Synopsys, Inc., a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design and manufacturing, today announced that 32 Master and 90 Bachelor students of Synopsys’ Armenia Educational Department (SAED) successfully completed the Synopsys educational program and now stand ready to begin their professional engineering careers. When the Armenian Government declared the high-tech industry to be a flagship of the national economy, offering high-quality engineering education became a priority.

To that end, Synopsys established educational programs in microelectronics design with the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) in 2004 and with Yerevan State University (YSU) in 2005. The goal of SAED is to train highly qualified specialists in the field of very large scale integration (VLSI) design and electronic design automation (EDA). More than 300 students have graduated from SAED, most of them employed in Synopsys Armenia and at other local high-tech companies such as Virage, Mentor and Credence.

After several years of hard study, today’s graduates are well equipped to meet the highest international engineering standards. During the commencement ceremony, Dr. Chi-Foon Chan, president and chief operating officer at Synopsys, conferred Synopsys Certificates of Achievement to the graduates. In the first years of the Bachelor program, students obtain a basic education in mathematics, physics and other scientific disciplines at their chosen universities. After acquiring a basic education, the top-performing students are selected to participate in the SAED program.

Synopsys technical experts and professors from the university select the students. Further education in the Bachelor program, Master program and Ph.D. studies are conducted by a customized SAED curriculum for VLSI design and EDA.

Studies are carried out in specially equipped classrooms donated by Synopsys (located in Synopsys Armenia and at the university) where each student has access to the latest EDA software tools via a network. Teaching, supervision of course projects, Master’s theses and Ph.D. dissertations are targeted toward actual design projects at Synopsys Armenia. Projects are completed in conjunction with leading professionals from Synopsys and professors from the university. Upon successful completion of the SAED program, graduates are qualified to work for Synopsys Armenia as well as other high tech companies.

“It’s very gratifying to be able to participate in such an exciting program that brings Armenians into the electronics design workforce,” said Dr. Chan. “All of us who have supported the program so far look forward to many more graduations, and to having an opportunity to work with the growing number of high-tech professionals in Armenia. These professionals are critical to making Armenia a leader in silicon design.”

“It is a pleasure for us to see the enthusiasm and energy of these graduates as they prepare for a career in advanced electronic design,” said Vazgen Melikyan, director of Synopsys Armenia educational department, honorable scientist of RA, Sc.D., Professor. “This field develops rapidly and we have to continuously reform our curricula in order to keep the quality of education at a high level and maintain Armenia as a leader.”

“Synopsys’ generosity and expertise has been instrumental in Armenia’s entrance into the high-tech domain,” said Aram Simonyan, rector at YSU. “As we celebrate these graduates’ accomplishments, we see a bright future for them and for our country in today’s growing electronics markets.”

“Today, we congratulate our graduates and also thank Synopsys for providing support to these students’ professional education,” said Professor Vostanik Marukhyan, SEUA rector. “Due to the purposeful use of Synopsys tools and technology, today’s candidates are able to join the ranks of the most educated professionals.”

In his valedictorian’s speech, David Mirzoyan, a graduate of the Master’s program and a current employee of Synopsys Armenia said, “Today’s ceremony symbolizes a whole period of hard work and great efforts made by people who lead Synopsys in its success and in its development in our country, in Armenia. The high qualifications of department lecturers and the high standard of education help provide an opportunity for department graduates to get the education they need to join Synopsys’ Armenia R&D team.”
